Mazatlan Beaches

Mazatlan is home to a vast number of beautiful beaches that stretch well over 12 miles along this Mexican city’s gorgeous Pacific coast.   Its many diverse beaches appeal to the tastes and interests of all types of people, attracting tourists and locals alike who want to swim, play or explore in the warm ocean waters that range in temperature from 65° to 75° Fahrenheit year round.

However, if you’re like most tourists who vacation in Mazatlan, you probably want to know what the best beaches are and where you can find them, so you can plan your trip accordingly to make sure you obtain the most enjoyment during your stay.   The following is a list of some of the best beaches Mazatlan has to offer and brief information about each.

Playa Sabalo – This is a popular and high-volume beach located in the Golden Zone where you will be able to experience a number of activities, such as swimming, parasailing and windsurfing, among many others.  Playa Sabalo is one of the safest places to swim due to the fact that the beach is protected from the two islands that are close to it in proximity - Deer Island and Goat Island.  It is close to hotels, the famous Valentino’s disco and features a number of vendors.

Playa Norte – This is the longest beach in Mazatlan, stretching for approximately 3 miles.  It features The Malecon, which is a charming seaside promenade that overlooks the white sandy beach.  This is a popular beach among the local residents of Mazatlan who frequently engage in sports on its sands.  It is also an ideal spot for beginners and less experienced surfers, as the waves are not as intense here.  Those who would like to swim will find the southern part of the beach to be the most favorable.

Playa Los Cerritos – situated in the northern part of Mazatlan, this beach is not close to the main stretch and is, therefore, not as crowded as the more touristy beaches.  It is ideal for visitors who would like to relax, surf, soak in the sun, and enjoy a romantic sunset, picnic or stroll.  That said, while this spot is ideal for relaxing and surfing, it’s not typically recommended for swimming due to strong waves and undertows

Playa Bruja – Considered to be one of the best beaches for surfing, Playa Bruja is located about 20 miles outside of Mazatlan’s primary tourist region.  That said, this beach isn’t for the timid surfer, this spot is known for its high waves that can reach up to 10 feet. Playa Bruja offers a more relaxing atmosphere for those who would like a break from the crowds to enjoy a quieter beach experience.

Stone Island – this small island features a big beach and Mexico’s third largest coconut grove.  A place to relax and unwind, Stone Island also provides tourists with the opportunity to ride horses along its beach.

Playa las Gaviotas – Located in the Golden Zone, this beach is incredibly popular and is known for its gold sand, hotels, calm waters for swimming, and its low tide that allows people to wade far out into the ocean at these times.

Playa Olas Atlas – Although one of Mazatlan’s smaller beaches, Playa Olas Atlas is a favorite among surfers, tourist and locals.  While its waves make it an ideal surfing ground, it is also perfect for sunbathing and features a saltwater swimming pool.  In addition, it is home to a good deal of Mazatlan’s history, as well as restaurants and seaside cafes, so there is plenty to see and enjoy at this unique beach.

Keep in mind, when it comes to choosing the beach or beaches that are best suited to your vacation plans, it’s a good idea to know what types of water activities (i.e. swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, jet skiing, parasailing, etc.) you would like to engage in while on your trip, as this will help you decide which beach will offer you the most favorable experience you’re seeking.
